Core Concept and History
What It Is
The fundamental idea behind astrocartography is that your natal chart (a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth) contains specific planetary energies. When you change your geographical location, these planetary influences are "re-angled" relative to that new place, thereby activating or emphasizing different facets of your birth chart.
The Founder
While the concept of astrological geography has ancient roots, the modern, widely-used system of astrocartography was pioneered in the 1970s by American astrologer Jim Lewis. Lewis developed the innovative graphic imaging approach that projects planetary lines across a world map, making this technique visually accessible and highly popular.

How an Astrocartography Map Works
An astrocartography map is a rectangular projection of the Earth covered with planetary lines. These lines are a visual representation of where the planets from your birth chart were angular (at one of the four cardinal points) around the world at the moment of your birth.

The Planetary Lines
Each line on the map is associated with a specific celestial body—the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—and carries the energy and themes of that planet.

Geographic Influence:

On a Line: Places that fall directly on these planetary lines are considered powerful and transformative, offering strong energies related to that planets themes.

Near a Line: The closer you are to a line, the more intense its influence will be.

No Line: If a city doesn't have a line running through it, it suggests that the planet wasn't in a significant astrological position there during your birth, meaning it may have less direct influence.

Harmonious and Disharmonious Aspects
In addition to your power lines, your natal chart in Astrocartography have aspects that can be interpreted as disharmonious or harmonius.​
​
The quality of a planetary line in astrocartography is heavily influenced by how that planet is aspected in your original natal chart.
​
Harmonious aspects or soft aspects allow the energies of the planets to flow easily, creating circumstances of opportunity, ease, and natural talent. When a planet is well-aspected in your natal chart, its lines on an astrocartography map are generally more favorable.
​
Disharmonious or hard aspects (90∘ Square, 180∘ Opposition), introduce friction, conflict, and tension. They present demanding circumstances that require conscious effort and integration to master the energies involved.
When a planet is heavily affected by these hard aspects in your natal chart, its corresponding lines on your astrocartography map will likely manifest as a location where you experience more challenges, pressure, or difficult, yet profoundly transformative, experiences.

Combination of lines and aspects in one area.
Multiple planetary energies and aspects both hard and soft may combine in one specific geographic area. The synergy between these factors creates a deep, multi-layered experience in that location, it is important to consider the dynamics created by the mix to have a more accurate reflection of the locations potential and influence.
